We avoided sun exposed slopes due to the sudden rise in temperatures in the sun that started at around 10:45 in the morning. The sun affected areas were melting on top (as per our skin track).
Not a crust, but definitely slid on a week layer. We think it was the January 17th layer - we looked at the crystals and did not believe it to be on a surface hoar layer.
We did evaluations of the snow pack all day. We isolated blocks without digging any pits and were evaluating the layers. We tested the slope before we ski'd and triggered the avalanche. We did a ski cut on a slight convexity we were concerned about in the top 1/3 of the slope.
