Skied one lap at sugarbowl today, skinning conditions were excellent from the parking lot to the top. Conditions were great, lots of powder, although the snow was clearly getting heavier as the day went on. Temps were rising and we experienced a bit of freezing rain and some snow. There was small amounts of sluffing in the steep bits. We dug a pit at 1500 m on a NE slope. Total snow depth was 190 cm. Snowpack consisted of ~35 cm of medium density snow, which sat on top of 100 cm of consolidated high density snow. There was no sign of a crust in the snowpack and we did not observe any buried surface hoar. We performed an Extended Column test, and the column fractured on the second last full arm tap (ECT 28), however there was no propagation or clear failure plane. Overall, we were surprised by the lack of slab property/propagation in our test. There were not really clear layers in the snowpack other than the change in snow density from the recent snow compared to the older snow. We were stoked about the great conditions for December 1st! Shaping up to be a great snowpack and excellent ski conditions 👌🏼
