Spring-like Conditions at Puzzle

Mia Klause, Sunday 11th February, 2024 8:00PM
Had an amazing day out on Puzzle Peak (as I'm sure a lot of the bow valley had this week!) While tracked in, old tracks were no issue and there was still a ton of room to play. Pin location is approx. where we decided to dig a pit. Total snow pack came to around 3.5 feet. about 3 cm of new snow on top of 1 cm crust to another chunk of new snow and another crust, with somewhat consolidated snow down to 12 cm of facets. Smack test took 14 hits to see any fracturing up higher, and 24 to see it fracture on the crust above the facets. -10 at the car at 9:30 am and what I can only imagine was maybe +2 around noon, and -2 by 4pm. Absolutely no wind! The warm temps made for a few heavier feeling turns up top. We did push to the small summit, but it's quite rocky still for the first few meters of skiing. About halfway up the slope was some beautiful light snow that was easy to glide on and that lasted most of the way back down into the valley. The eastern exit gully still has an open creek, a little adventurey to get out of, but nothing too bad. Some resort skiing to descend back down to the cars. There's been quite a bit of activity and debris left from the back side of Dolomite, so we just steered clear during the warmest part of the day, although a lot of it looked a bit older, there was some new stuff further into the circuit. Clouds started coming in just as were we summiting, and some new storm snow was falling by 2 pm and picked up by 4 pm. Still plenty of turns to be had, but I'm sure there will be some changes with the new snow.
