It's all about that base!

Lots of avalanche activity here during last week's storm cycle. The only recent avalanche activity looked to be from cornices dropping off of ridgetops. Some cornices triggered storm slabs and a deep persistent layer near the base of the snowpack last week. It looked like conditions are improving in the area since our last couple of visits with no whumpfing or shooting cracks observed even while sidehilling across steep test slopes. We dug on an east slope at 2150m at treeline and found 140cm of total snow. The recent storm snow seems to have bonded quite well to old layers. There was a layer of surface hoar down 55cm but none of our snowpack tests failed on it.
