Snow Zone 2019/02/17

Luke_Skiwalker, Monday 18th February, 2019 7:12PM

We spent the weekend up in the snow zone. Skiing in and out was very brushy and challenging. The snow zone was good, some rocks still not covered, but decent skiing. Wind effect in the alpine is very variable with dust on crust changing to 30-40cm of powder within 50m. We couldn't really put an aspect on it and enjoyed skiing on northern, western and eastern slopes. We mostly skied moderately steep slopes between 2100 &2300m, moving around the bowl. We saw some size 1 sluffs that had come off steep bluffs. Foot pen was 30-40cm and ski pen about 20cm. A hasty pit showed a 20cm of dense storm snow sandwiched between 10cm of low density powder top and bottom. Snow depth was around 1.7m. It snowed 2-3cms Saturday night. Very calm day Sunday with the sun coming out in the afternoon. -15c on Monday morning at camp.
