At Barnes Lake today it was very warm, 3° when we left the truck and 0.5° at our high point at 1980 m. There was some snowballing out of steep slopes but no avalanches and we saw quite a lot of steep alpine terrain. It was raining down low and lightly snowing above 1800 m. There were 2 lonely cm of new snow. There were moderate gusts from the south but they weren't carrying any snow.
We didn't see any new natural avalanches.
We dug a snowpit on the south aspect at 1980 m and had no results in our column tests. Snow depth was 75 cm and the top 20 cm were moist.
The heavy snow on top made for difficult and unpredictable skiing.
