Thar N Couloir

heathtanderson, Sunday 30th March, 2025 12:00PM
Climbed up Thar N couloir. There is a size 3 that has ran down to the lake (1300m) and started around 1750m. Looks to have been started from cornice fall. 1600m and below snow varied between knife ice and a breakable crust making travel conditions interesting. Above 1600m ~10cm of dry snow could be found wind deposited into the old avalanche paths. This would slide relatively easily as a cohesive slab with a simple hand shear but was only in very isolated areas. Above the start zone there was 5-15cm of snow on a hard crust. Testing with a simple hand shear it was more difficult to get this to move as a cohesive slab. We saw no other signs of instability. We summited Thar and rode down the south side. Snow was very wet and heavy. A couple size 1s below rocky cliffs were seen on the way down. No other signs of instability were seen.
