Snow Stability Observation Report: Aspect: W Snowpack: 171 cm Elevation: 10,784 The snowpack stability was assessed with the following results: Compression Test (CTH): A moderate failure was observed at 121 cm, with a CTH21 result, indicating a relatively stable layer but with some potential for failure under stress. A stronger failure occurred at 52 cm, with a CTH29 result, suggesting a deeper, more consolidated layer but with potential for failure. Extended Column Test (ECTN): The ECTN17 at 121 cm indicates no propagation and a fracture characteristic consistent with the findings of the compression test. Overall, the snowpack shows some localized instability, particularly at the 52 cm depth, but no significant signs of widespread instability were observed at this time. Caution is advised, particularly in areas where these layers may be more sensitive to additional loading. With the additional snow accumulation and sustained periods of high winds, wind loading, particularly on NE slopes, can present a wind slab avalanche problem.

Snowpack

The snowpack at the observation site was 171 cm deep with 30+ centimeters of fresh snow on top. A pencil hardness layer was present between 111 cm and 105 cm. Below this, the snowpack shows a transition from 1F hardness to 4F hardness, indicating a progressively weaker structure. The bottom 52 cm of the snowpack is faceted, suggesting weaker, less cohesive snow that could be more prone to instability. This faceting at the base could present a potential persistent slab avalanche problem.
