Quick Observation
Skied off the summit of Mt fernie yesterday. The south aspects are holding better snow than the north due to stripping from NW winds. Cornices over N aspects also stripped of fresh growth. Variable skiing on exposed slopes, punchy/wind crusty, and some good turns! The sun had a large impact on solar slopes. Witnessed a small loose avalanche on the south face of proctors west summit (~2000m). Temps were cold in the shade, and skinning in your t shirt warm in the sun. Not quite enough solar to create moist snow in the alpine, and will not form a sun crust. Some isolated solar TL features will form a crust. Cold dry boot top pow remains in sheltered areas at all aspects and elevations! Some surface hoar growth but not as much as expected, and largely wind broken. Access to the west bowl is good, fantastic skiing all over, minimal wind effect! Friendly reminder, no matter how frustrated you are with a challenging skin track, please do not boot pack the skin track. Especially in tight steep gullies where options are limited!
