We skied two runs at Corbin's Pass today. The day started off sunny and warm, but cooled down as it clouded over. Our first lap was in the big cut blocks from about 1560m down to 1200m. The surface snow was soft but there was a hard crust anywhere from 10-30cm deep depending on aspect. The second run was from 1700m down the slide path. The snow started off very deep before the crust showed up partway down. We saw a small slab avalanche that released below a convexity in the cut block on the crust level. The snow was quite shallow here, so we suspect it released after being baked in the sun for a bit. We also saw cracks spread out nearby. We avoided convexities and unsupported slopes as a result.
We dug a quick pit at about 1560m elevation on a south/southeast aspect at the top of a cut block We got a resistant CTM 16 result down 35 centimetres on a hard crust layer. We also got a very hard result about 45cm down.
