Round Mountain

mb15, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

Skinned up to the red heather hut from Diamond Head lot. Good traction and consistent snow on the skin track up. Conditions at Red Heather were fantastic. Blower powder in the glades and up to Round Mountain. Very populated. First lap was on the hill South East above Red Heather Hut area. We then carried on to the top of Round Mountain. No whumpfing, cracking, or signs of recent avalanche activity. Did a snow profile and column test at 1550m on a northwestern slope. The January persistent weak layer was at 40 cm and was completely non-reactive. Column test showed no signs of instability at any level. We were able to pry the weak layer free with some work, but it seems well bonded to the snow above. The conditions get considerably worse as you go down in elevation, though the skin track skied well all the way down. Great day in the mountains! Vibes high.
