Raining at Kieth's

nickawbrown, Sunday 23rd February, 2025 12:00AM
The Saturday night storm came primarily as rain at Kieth's Hut. Seemed to be about 10-20cm of new snow on Saturday morning that slowly turned from heavy powder to dense wet snow throughout the day as the precip transitioned from wet snow to rain. Glopping was an issue on the ski up. Around maybe 2PM on Saturday, several size 2 avalanches cut loose naturally from the Anniversary Glacier morraine. By Sunday morning a dense (~2inch) rain crust had formed. It seemed like the storm didn't change the snowpack depth but it did make all the snow denser and wetter. Stability seemed ok on our ski out since it was hard to imagine much movement happening under that thick rain crust. Skiing on the egress was primarily breakable crust.
