South York Sunshine

southrockies, Wednesday 15th January, 2025 12:00PM
Today we went to South York in the Crowsnest Pass to seek out the sun. We observed no new avalanches and found no surprises other than very warm weather. It was +3 at 2100 m, and +5.6 at the sleds at 1900 m. The snow depth was 70 cm and the wind was blowing light-moderate (mostly moderate... eek) from the NW. We observed a wind-affected surface. There was no wind slab, but the snowpack was wind-pressed on certain aspects and scoured on others. There was no snow available for transport, so even though we did notice clouds zooming across alpine ridges, there was no snow transport seen. In the sun and out of the wind it felt like spring. The surface snow was moist. When the temperature drops, it will make for some crusty and hard skiing. Unfortunately, the skiing was less than desirable, but it was a fun day nonetheless. There was logging going on at the staging area but this didn't cause any issues. There was a good sled track in to where we put our skis on.
