Mt Freda

mck.dev, Sunday 27th February, 2022 6:45PM

Up Freda for a day tour. Rain down at 600m where we parked, signs of rain in the morning up to 1000m. Quickly turned to snow, then cleared. Very touchy looking snow conditions--CTE3 sudden planar, ECTN with non-planar break @ 6 taps on a 36 degree NW slope. There was also a small size 1 natural storm slab avalanche observed on a similar aspect on a slightly steeper slope. All things considered, were very conservative with our route finding, staying on mellow slopes and avoiding anything steep. It was an interesting time to be out in the mountains, to say the least!

Weather Report

Light to no winds blowing up from the valley from the NE below 1250m, and changing to SE as we climbed higher and became more exposed to the prevailing winds over the ridge. Rain down at Freda lake as we parked in the morning, turning to snow on the ascent, then clearing around 9:30am. Scattered flurries on and off throughout day.
