Sun Is Shining, B. Marley

southrockies, Wednesday 22nd January, 2025 1:00PM
Out at 1st Peak today on the west side of the Lizard Range, we had amazing visibility … literally not a cloud in the sky ….. we saw (almost) no natural avalanches (see photo), no signs of instability, and no reactivity to our sled travel. Winds were light from the South West, while with a high of -6 at treeline, temps remained cool ….. except on steep south facing slopes where we noted the sun’s power starting to have a small effect, particularly at lower (1500 m) elevations. Away from the sun, and particularly in sheltered areas, we found great dry powder. In exposed areas, there’s definitely previous wind affect, but with the cold nights and very light winds, Faceting and Surface Hoar formation has been breaking up those firmer surfaces.
