1/4 Aemmer

Meshwell Boschmann, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Went to check how much north/northeast we could push things on Temple before running into wind affect. Well, wind affect we found. The lower fan was a mix of boiler plates and boot top deep breakable/facetted windslabs. The upper fan was a better structured windslab multi-layered cake. Hasty pit results: - CT0 Sudden Planar down 5 cm (5 cm thick pencil windslab over facets) - CT9 Progressive Collapse down 25 cm (10 cm thick faceting pencil minus windslab over facets over planar slough deposit) - Bombproof below that We followed a slough runnel up to just below where the fan turns into the couloir proper. In that location, a couple rocks were still showing in the middle and did not inspire much confidence. Thinner snowpack with a bit of a convex roll, looked like a great trigger point. We bailed at that point even though we suspected that the windslab(s) were likely going to disappear further up where the couloir is slightly more sheltered. One of us hiked down the bootpack while the other skied the windslab cake and boiler plates without releasing much. The top breakable windslab (breakable crust) made for a few challenging turns. On a positive note, we were able to ski right down to Annette Lake with only a couple very short marginally covered rock sections. As a closing note, we also witnessed a "Mini Baranow Effect" with 6 people (2 different groups) skiing the Cobra Couloir. They reported good conditions.
