Mt Rohr

apeplowball, Wednesday 6th April, 2022 5:00PM

Toured today in the Mt Rohr area, had a tentative objective to ski a north facing line off the ridge but backed off that once we got into the basin and saw a large size 3 natural slide (see avalanche tab). Also saw multiple size 1s and others size 2-2.5+ on other points along the ridge also on north aspects. Heard one loud bang that sounded like a cornice failure but did not get eyes on it. Spooky energy in the mountains today for sure. Stuck to mellower slopes which all skied nicely. Didn’t dig a pit as visual obs were enough to dictate our choices for the day but probing suggested height of the new storm snow in the area is 30-40cm with more in lee areas. Cornices are looming very large, snow was light but it was warming quickly. Snow was damp on all aspects below 1500m by the afternoon. Things certainly feel touchy out there + warming in the coming days = very conservative decision making/ride your bike pls!

Avalanche Conditions

Slab avalanches today or yesterday.

Rapid temperature rise to near zero degrees or wet surface snow.
