Fitzsimmons Range

msulkers, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Better viz today allowed for better obs in the Fitzsimmons Range. Observed two size 3 avalanches on adjacent W asp slopes from 1900m down. Moat recent looked about 72hrs old given the refill; the other perhaps 24 hrs older and much more filled in. Suspect 180106 Mfcr as failure plane as crown est 2-2.5m deep. Crowns on both slopes at sudden convexities to 40 deg. Most recent appeared to be as much as 350-400m wide. Otherwise no new naturals. Some small windslabs formed last night to 30cm deep near ridgetops but not reactive. Windpress seemed more dense underneath than yesterday and more supportive of skis and poles down to 1630m. Some near surface facetting of upper 10cm especially with temp gradient. Surface hoar forming to 6mm this afternoon on surfaces at TL and ALP. Some natural cornice falls but without triggering pillows below.
