Peyto Glacier/Mistaya Mountain

Steven Noël, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Spent the last two nights on the Peyto Glacier. Snowed ~10cm Thursday evening/night with little wind which greatly improved ski quality on the otherwise heavily wind affected glacier. We made the slog over to Mistaya Mt on Friday under a strong cold W wind and mainly overcast. Nice powder on the sheltered glacier up to the col near Peyto Peak, but N from there it was extremely wind blasted and we left the skis shortly past the col. The fresh storm snow was forming small poorly-bonded wind slabs on lee aspects that sometimes sluffed off as we scrambled through rocky terrain. Based on this we decided not to attempt Trapper today (Sat) and instead just skied out. We witnessed/saw evidence of ~5 small slides on the S aspect of Peyto Peak (Size 1 +/-) on steep solar aspects. They appeared to be the same recent wind/storm slabs, but nothing stepped down to deeper layers. Saturday was a mix of sun and cloud with a persistent W wind. Cold (-20) overnight but the sun was warm and melting snow on exposed rocks.
