Candy Cain
Vancouver Island

It’s Mt Cain season yet again (yay!). Ahead of opening weekend we poked around in East & West bowl. The storm that slammed VI over Christmas has deposited ~50 cm of snow. Wind has redeposited up to three times that amount on northerly slopes. Significant cornice growth is occurring in the alpine. Snow is still available for wind transport with the continued cool temperatures. Near ridge top, the winds have scoured the snowpack down its old surface - crust (or in some places, rocks!). We had no significant results in snow pack tests near ride line in west bowl (1600 m). While the Christmas windslab appears to be healing, new snow is in the forecast and things will change over the weekend.
