Island Alpine Guides Mount Adrian

info, Saturday 13th January, 2024 9:40AM
Elevation range 1750m to 1250m. Temp range -13 to -16. Winds light gusting moderate NW at ridge top in the morning getting lighter through the day. Lots of previous wind effect up in the alpine from NW winds but still pockets of powder. BTL was the best skiing with nice pow there that was not wind affected. HS BTL around 140cm in areas skied which means lots of exposed obstacles remain at the lower elevations of this trip (1250m). Top 10-15cm of snowpack faceted with crystals visibly around 5mm on the surface. Wind slabs cracking a little bit in a few places but no propagation or reactivity. Had a good look at both Mount Adrian and Alexandra Peak on most aspects and saw only a few natural avalanches to size 1.5. We stuck to mellow, supported terrain in areas of wind effect and skied steeper terrain in areas with no wind effect at lower elevations.
