Harvey Area

southrockies, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

We were in the Harvey area today checking out how the Jan 30 surface hoar layer was doing. We found the SH is still alive and well in sheltered treeline and below treeline terrain. We didn't get any whumpfing or shooting cracks today but a group in that area yesterday did. There were some test results that made us avoid terrain traps that could increase burial depth with even a small avalanche. An extended column test result of ECTP 10 down 30cm on size 6 surface hoar. The warm temperatures were on our radar also but we stayed on mostly north facing slopes and the strong winds and cloud cover were keeping the snow surface dry. On our way down we did see several small wet loose avalanches out of steep solar facing slopes.
