Dolomite

AlpineSandwich, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Dolomite cirque. Solar aspects (before 1pm) were motionless. Sticky surface snow (clumpy balls) under the skins was annoying but not terrible. No observed wet loose activity prior to skiing easterly aspects Pre-warming the treeline solar aspects had 10-20 cm of a pencil-firm “slab” atop rotten facets. Very supportive surface crust at the moment. Medium hand shear results. Late afternoon, treeline and lower was hot hot hot. Mushy snow turns on untracked snow if one skied off the luge track. Sheltered easterly skiing was New Zealand pow. Otherwise known as boot top snow (if you have small boots) on top of hardened old wind hammered slopes. Dust on crust. Or what you get at Lake Louise if you ski beside a snow blower on a groomer. Observed a 10m wide, 10m long wind slab failure below a loaded cornice feature. Thick to thin, very steep roller. South facing at treeline.
