Elkford

southrockies, Thursday 22nd February, 2024 2:30PM
Today in Elkford we ventured into Smith Basin, there was evidence of a recent avalanche cycle from yesterday's warm temperatures and sunshine. These solar-triggered avalanches were up to size 1.5 and did not trigger any persistent slab avalanches. The total snowpack depth in this area was 130 cm. The most recent 30 cm remains soft on north-facing slopes but has a melt-freeze crust on steep south-facing slopes. In our profile today we did get a resistant test result releasing on the facets that sit above the crust. The mid-pack is gaining strength and the early season crusts are generally still intact. The ride in was amazing! The grooming is top notch. We just need more snow.
