Great skiing in sheltered terrain and good skiing on steep S asp. 15-20 cm recent low density storm snow over previous settled in sheltered terrain, over previous sun crust on S asp.. Skiied 2100 m to 1600 m S asp.
First day this season out in the local hills. Good coverage up Rd 80. Probing generally felt a strong dense snowpack. 140-160 cm at 1600 m. 1750 m sheltered NE asp resistant planar / broken hand shears down 40 cm on decomposing surface hoar layer likely January 10. Up to 30 cm recent storm snow over sun crust on steep S asp (likely Jan 10). Mod to strong wind transport at ridge from west to northwest, building soft reactive windslabs immediate lees, propagation limited to feature but unreactive once out of wind effect. Windslabs were really our only concern today, and getting out of the wind into good skiing! General lack of reports from our local zone. Sharing observations is good!
Beautiful winters day to be out in the hills.
