Narao

julie.morter, Sunday 21st January, 2024 9:40AM
Went to Narao today. ~65 cm HS near the valley bottom climbing to just over a meter at treeline. Wind affect started well before treeline and was present even in tight trees. The open areas had a firmer wind slab while the treed areas had a soft slab that was pretty grabby for skiing. Snow conditions actually improved down low where there was less wind affect, but then buried hazards and bushes became an issue. There wasn't anywhere to get a pit or even good hand-shear without a bush in it that we could find. We did see a pretty firm crust ~5-10cm above the ground and a second, less firm crust under the storm snow ~10cm deep. Mostly facets except for the storm snow. Near treeline in a slightly larger opening we got a large whumpf and shooting crack.
