Marriott basin weekend

evansouthern, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Skied into the Wendy hut on Saturday and proceeded to do a few laps on small north facing slopes. Conditions excellent. We also rode some south facing slopes which were terrible and very crusty. Sunny afternoon. Higher elevations many slides visible from a day or two before on northerly aspects. Saturday night’s storm dumped about 30 cm of new snow and wind was moderate from almost due south overnight. On Sunday we chose to ride somewhat mellow generally southerly slopes 2100m and below to take advantage of quick access to nice snow and avoid wind issues. Going up, we experienced and felt a large settlement and very loud whumph on a SSE facing slope near the saddle North west of the hut. We also dug a profile and saw moderate sudden collapse on the same aspect just above what appeared to be the mid March crust. Temps -4 all day. Conditions in conservative slopes were terrific- light blower powder. The sun came out a bit but It continued to snow a little bit Sunday night. Sunday was very hot and sunny by late morning but the first few runs were awesome light powder again. Air temp was actually -4 but the sun became very strong and snow surface was 0 and melting. We saw a size 2.5 slab on steep north near the hut. There were also about two dozen smaller point releases on sunny slopes in the area. Great weekend and a treat for Easter!
