Jasper Visitor Safety Spent April 9-12, 2021 on the Bow to Yoho Traverse. Weather Over the 4 days the daytime highs were -10 and the overnight lows were -20. Skies where a mix of high overcast, convective clouds, and clear. Overnight on April 10 we had strong NE winds in the Alpine, other than that winds were light to moderate form the N with some easterly. We received only trace amounts of snow over the 4 days. Hazard The avalanche hazard was low with cornices being our main concern. We observed numerous cornice failures up to Sz 2.5, cornice failures were entraining loose dry. Few Na wind slabs observed up to Sz 1. Ski Conditions We experienced variable spring skiing conditions. Protected alpine slopes provided good skiing in boot top powder while exposed slopes where wind hammered. Ridge tops are mainly scoured. Steep south aspects have 10cm over a supportive crust. Glaciers Good coverage on the glaciers with 3m HS in most locations. Heading around the East Ridge on Collie we probed as little as 70cm.
