Wind as fast as a Racehorse

southrockies, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

We spent the day in Crowsnest pass near Racehorse peak. The wind was blowing all day with strong gusts from various directions and it was still finding snow to drift. On our climb up we had some drummy sounds when we walked over small loaded areas but no cracking of whumpfing. We ascended through low angle trees to get to a nice shoulder in the alpine. Once there we found anything exposed to the wind was scoured back to rock and lee areas were stiff wind slab. We skied back down through the sheltered trees and had remarkably good skiing. We saw a natural avalanche from the past few days (not sure exactly when) from a south facing bowl in the alpine. Appeared to slide on the December rain crust.
