Whoa! Deep and Low Density.

Trip up York Creek in the Crowsnest for the first time this season. There was 60 cm of recent very low density storm snow at treeline and an overall snow depth of 120 cm. We could see that there had been a lot of smaller (size 1.5) loose dry avalanches and very soft slab avalanches during the recent storm. The new snow was so low density that our sled tracks were just trenches, you couldn't see the ski or paddle marks. When we got on our skis and were trail breaking, the snow was up to our knees! All that said, the snow had just enough cohesion to make whumpfing and shooting cracks so we stayed in simple, low angle terrain away from overhead hazard.
