Aemmer couloir

jjinwood13, Friday 4th April, 2025 4:30AM
Team of 4 set out to ski Aemmers couloir, 5:30 in the car park we started our travels along the access road, refreeze on the road made for easy and quick travel on the approach. We arrived at lake Annette seeing a large natural avalanche cycle suspected trigger from a serac failure then pulling rocks of the wall below then pulling the cone below. The avalanche ran full path reaching the lake and pushing some young - middle aged trees over. Suspected size 3. Through the moraine and up towards aemmers we were finding a 4f to 1f wind skin breakable under the ski with 25-30 of fist below. Ski pen breaking trail was about 10-15 cm no cracking or whumpfing was observed. Got to the fan and began boot packing from under the first lookers right cliff band, there was some sun input on the fan but due to the early start and cold temps we proceeded on, about 150 m up we were beginning to find a 25-30 cm reactive slab that wasn’t bonding well to the previous surface layer and turned around. 1pm we began the boot pack up cobra which we believed to be more sheltered and less wind effected. We found there was a 3-5 cm wind skin in the occasional spot but was disconnected through out the couloir. Skiing was exceptional for the most part with 30-40 of 4f. Ski out was warm and sunny although the winter access where you stay on top of the creek was collapsing in the afternoon not sure how long it has left with the warming periods forecasted.
