Brandywine Surface Hoar & More

ghelgeson, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

We found 2 to 3 mm surface hoar on northwest, north, northeast and east facing alpine slopes in the Brandywine today. It’s been cooked off alpine solar slopes and we did not see any of it at or below treeline. Assuming it doesn’t get blown away by wind before it starts snowing, the weekend’s storm snow is likely to rest on this problematic interface, at least in this location. This would likely allow for surprisingly easy, fast & wide propagation of freshly formed storm slabs. While the valley was shrouded in cloud today we found great riding in the alpine. Convective clouds made it tough to see at times but it felt pretty good when the sun came out. We did not see any avalanche activity today, it felt like open season where you could essentially “ride it if it’s white.” Cornices were our only concern today and they were easy to avoid. Solar aspects have a crust but polars had fun well settled old snow.
