MCR Observation

Mountain Conditions Report

Been out in the alpine in the Lake Louise and Lake Ohara areas in the last few days. On August 6th, we climbed Mt Victoria via the Huber Ledges and Mt Huber via the NE Face. Both routes were in great shape with a good freeze making for good snow travel. The schrund is easily crossed with a small bit of vertical snow that is easily climbed.

On August 9th, we climbed Glacier Peak via the NW ridge from Ringrose Couloir and descended the NE buttress (roughly routes 19 and 20 in Central Rockies Guidebook). A slightly worse, but ample freeze made for good travel on these routes and the remnants of the winter snowpack and avalanche debris made for nice travel well into valley bottom on the descent.

The big surprise for me right now is how good the snow travel still is given the hot, dry summer we have had.

Some more photos of the peaks in this area can be found here: https://goo.gl/uwZPyc

Ian Jackson
ACMG Mountain Guide
Visitor Safety Technician
Banff, Yoho & Kootenay National Parks
