Mt Boom S Slopes (Chickadee area)
Banff Yoho Kootenay

We skied the lower part of the first avalanche path on S slopes of Mt Boom after some beacon/companion rescue practice in the flat (don't follow our tracks). Snowpack is thin and very unsuportive, ranging from 50 to 70cm with 10-20cm of facets at the base, overlayed by some unconsolidated snow. December 7th crust can be found on those south slopes about 10-20cm down, covered by the recent snow. Overall poor riding quality and lots of rocks or other hazard are barely covered by this unsuportive snowpack. Still lots of open water and thin bridges on the creek on the approach. We saw a couple of size 0.5-1 wet loose avalanches both from the upper slopes of Mt Boom (sun) and the N side of Whymper but they didn't triger anything. No wind in the valley, temperatures were cold (-15) as expected and surprisingly the sun showed up for most of the day.
