Mt Gordon

Went up Mt Gordon today. Coverage in the approach canyon is excellent. A -17c start, reaching -7c on the summit and somewhere above 0 back at the parking lot. Mostly clear, some clouds around noon. Lots of wind all day, mod winds with strong gusts from the south, some blowing snow but it's been blown around so much already the plumes were quite small. Found easy travel all day with minimal boot pen on the icefield. Ski quality was excellent once past the wind scoop on Gordon (above that was sastrugi), and the toe of the Wapta was as fine a ski I've ever had, super fast and consistent. My partner probed 220cm at 2650m, 235cm at 2750m, and couldn't bottom out a 330cm probe below Gordon at around 2900m. Coverage was great on the icefield proper but much of the alpine has gotten absolutely wind hammered. Tons of exposed rock in the whole area, it doesn't really look like March on a lot of the peaks. Snow stayed dry all day with it becoming a bit heavy in late afternoon below treeline. Some minor pinwheels out of rocky terrain but didn't see any natural activity. Found no instabilities where we traveled. The ice cave is filled in, not sure if you could dig a tunnel in there or what. Feels like spring is here. A fine day out, pack your sunscreen!
