Raven Lake hurricane

esarhawkins, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:32PM

Weekend trip up to Raven Lake. Unfortunately quite minimal skiing was done, but some quick observations. Saturday a surprising amount of low density snow from trailhead (1200 m) up to just below treeline. Nearing treeline, snow depth was variable with mostly breakable wind crust and slab. Snow depth around the cabin was around 100 cm. We had winds that must have been close to 80-90 km/h through the evening and early morning, with negligible new precipitation but notable wind transport. Warming temps made all snow below 1650 m quickly turn to mashed potatoes. Observed one, possibly two size 1.5-2 natural slab avalanches on steep N slopes above the lake.
