Surprisingly good, powder from summit

alxjeh, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Talked to Parks Canada to confirm Mt Jimmy Jr is not in closed area. Note Jimmy Jr Bowl is in the closed area. -15C at parking lot at 8am. -7C at summit at noon. Sun came out 11:30am. No wind other than gentle breeze on summit. Boot deep, dry powder in trees on ascent. Wind affected just above bench. Ascended climber's right of cornices but bowl left side rapidly to SE ridge following previous day kicksteps. Bulletproof for about 50m. Wind affected on SE ridge line but increasing powder ascending to climber's right to 10cm deep on solid underlayer as we skinned up on the East aspect. Summit required 20m snow climb in unconsolidated. Skiied 10cm powder the length of upper aspect (approx. 30 degree slope) to the skier's right of ridge cornice and down the steeper bowl to the bench. Some minor evidence of top 5 cm forming wind slabs as we traversed the steeper bowl slope. No signs of any other instabilities. Continued down the past avalanche chute through trees in boot deep dry powder to car.
