Mongolia Bowl

Danyal Taylor, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Skinned up lost boys to the ridge and dug a snow pit on the west facing slope into Mongolia. Skied into Mongolia and up the other side. Best skiing is anywhere the sun hasn't touched the snow. On the column test it failed on the 16th tap on the rain crust layer. It was not a clean shear about half the column slid/fell off and the other half stayed on. Snow 30-50cm on top of a crust. Snow was either wind drifts or fresh snow deposited from the storm over the weekend. Wind removed all snow on exposed ridges. Best snow in the trees on north slopes. Opinion: wasn't too concerned of the result. There is really good bondage of crust to fresh snow and planar results weren't likely. Skiing: solar really screwed up the snow it would go soft fresh to crusty depending on if the sun hit it. Second run on the far Mongolia ridge was beautiful fresh powder. Rode a 42 degree north west open chute. Snow stability was good.
