Bell Couloir

lindslangs, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

A great day out to Bell Couloir. The recent 15cm~ refresh atop the crust skied well. The crust was very supportive and not really breakable in all elevations of our ski. Winds started picking up in the afternoon, causing the fresh 15cm ~ of snow on the moraines to start slabbing up, different than earlier in the day. Lots of wind transport occurring here. We took our time on the descent of the moraines, noticing some small reactivity/ cracking on ski cuts (localized and not sliding). The crust made for excellent and efficient bootpacking. We decided to boot pack right up from the bottom due to the supportive nature of the fluff on crust. Sluff management was key on the descent, especially moving over the steep convexity mid couloir. The first member of our party moved a small wind slab (10m x 10m) which carried out to the bottom of the couloir with the sluff. This was expected. The rest skied well all the way back to the lake. No signs of snowpack instability on the ascent or descent, minus noticing how the winds were starting to affect the surface snow. Taylor lake exit very sporty. Iced luge track with a healthy amount of needles and twigs covering the trail from the high winds we’ve been experiencing. Fast travel though!
