Observation Sub Peak West

pilkingtondominic, Thursday 13th February, 2025 9:00AM
A great day up to observation sub peak west, followed the skin track through the forest then broke left and headed up the ridge. Skin track is well established until the bowl then we broke trail along the ridge. Anything on an east aspect is completely wind scoured and down to rock, but there is a good level of snow in the bowls and gullies. Some fair cornices (1-3m) building along the ridge but no sign anything had released recently apart from a couple of small size 1 dry loose on the backside of cirque. Dropped into the slope just before the summit and had good 30/40cm deep powder, with some thin spots on the sides and at the bottom. The snow in the glades is also in good condition at the moment and we were able to ride pretty much all the way back down to the car. Stayed about -20 all day but felt warm in the sun, no wind and in moderate-low-low conditions.
