We skimmed up Blackcomb glacier to the col below spearhead peak used to access guides notch. The col was windswept but there was a sizable pillow of wind slab at the top that grew to at least 70cm with some pole probing. Big shooting cracks happened as we skied onto it. From there we diverted to don’t swills entrance but found the same accumulation of wind slab. So we turned around and skied repeat laps of the Blackcomb glacier where vis was better and the snow was good.
We noticed it was quite warm up high with almost no snow falling but very high moisture in the air covering us in rime. WB showed a pretty big inversion. Last weeks crust was covered in very light snow with heavier wet snow from Sunday on top. Generally steeper slopes or those with cornices above are filled with chunder and pretty hard to ski well. Lower angle slopes are the ticket until we get a bit more snow!
