Tenquille Area Avalanche
South Coast Inland
voost , Monday 13th January, 2025 11:15PM
Skier triggered. Group of 3 had already crossed over the slope. Skier in front noticed a whoomph and shooting crack and group decided to turn around. Skier at rear (now front) triggered reactive failure, which propagated westward across slope. Start zone was above the skier on 35 degree slope. Skier on lower angle. Skier caught in avalanche was carried 10-15ft before stopping. Sudden failure with crown propagation 100-150m. Slab thickness varied from 10cm-70cm. Majority of avalanche deposited snow on bench below cliff with a small amount running over the bench and close to the lake. Other small avalanches triggered further away as main volume of snow was moving. Skier was able to self rescue and stay on top of snow. Party skinned up and out of bowl via low angle supported slopes.
