Copper Mountain

Marcus Baranow, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Traversed Copper Mountain from Castle Junction to Redearth Creek. Skinned up to the north ridge on the west side (tops out on the western sub peak of Copper). Had to bootpack the last 100m of vert to top out, snow was supportive but we stuck to rock or spines to attempt to remove some exposure. At the top we were in stormy whiteout conditions until reaching the SE facing run from just below the summit. We cut 3 large cornices off the ridge and into the run which triggered 3 size 2 avalanches that did not propergate very wide (but ran a good distance in the steep terrain). We skied the bed surface for about the first 400m of vert. The remaining 600m was mostly cream powder with debris on top (although powder was found along the walls of the couloir). Both the bed surface and debris skied well for the snow style. The fan had heavy/wet snow (1700m ASL). Despite the warm temps lower down the cross country trail was fast and we were able to finish the day rather quickly. No other signs of avalanches outside of the ones we triggered but limited ops today due to weather. We did have one whumpf at treeline near a convex roll while skinning.
