Spray River Falls

jmartin, Monday 5th February, 2024 5:00PM
5cm of evenly distributed storm snow overlying a breakable melt-freeze crust was observed on the hike in. As soon as the sun came out spindrift started to come down from the steep rocky ledges on the left and right side of the climb and continued throughout the day. Seven or so were noted and five of these swept over the climb directly, running fast and loose over the melt freeze crust. They did not have much mass, but they lasted from 5-15 seconds each and it would not take much more snow to potentially knock you off while climbing. One hit me while I was leading the first pitch, but I was on a relatively flat spot and there was not enough mass to cause any trouble. The ice was in decent condition. Large dinner plate action if you ventured outside the existing pick holes.

Weather Report

Mix of sun and cloud throughout the day. Felt to be in the -5 range. No blowing snow observed across the valley or on the climb. No precip.
