Elkford - Mear

southrockies, Wednesday 5th February, 2025 10:00AM
Today in Elkford we found 30 cm of light fluffy low-density snow. In sheltered areas, a soft storm slab was reactive in our snowpack tests. An extended column test propagated across the entire block down 30 cm on a facet layer formed during the January drought. Wind slabs are developing with moderate NE wind in open treeline and alpine terrain. With plenty of snow available for transport we suspect wind slab sensitivity to triggers will increase over the coming days as the slab stiffens over the January drought layer down 30 cm. Cold temperatures are supporting the continued faceting of the lower snowpack, but it remains consolidated.
