Lake Ohara

kseel, Saturday 8th February, 2025 10:38PM

Spent 3 days based out of the E. Parker hut at Ohara. Overall riding conditions were excellent in the trees and open glades with boot-top powder over a supportive base. Snow depth on the ridge above Schaffer Lake was 220cm and 150cm just above the hut. Weather on sunday was stormy with 10cm new falling through the day. Mon-Tues were blue bird with lows in the deep -20s and mid-day highs around -8C. Skied out today as the new storm system hit with warmer temps (-4C) moderate winds and light snow. Observed a Sz 3 to the left above the Odaray prospect that ran full path - the trigger was a loose/dry sluff from a rock which stepped down and propagated widely. Several size 1-2 avalanches off Wiwaxi and Huber with one running down to the lake and possibly punching through the ice. The snowpack has grown and changed significantly over the past week or so and with a new storm underway it will take some time for things to settle out.
