Cirque forepeak (north bowl attempt)

maaskantw, Wednesday 23rd October, 2024 9:33PM

The Day started Bluebird and calm up into the Alpine up until noon. The snow on the south/east face was storm snow on top of a wind/sun crust 15cm down. We traversed Southeast with the plan to drop in from the south ridge to ski down 100M or so, then skin up to the saddle entrance to drop in the North bowl. Approaching the ridge the winds from the NW got stong, exposing a fair bit of bolders/rock on the ridge, and the ridge was primarily cornices and a lot of windloading. Our best drop point from the ridge was still very blind and can only assume heavily windloaded. We decided to bail and head back NW towards our uptrack due to the uncertainity of that ridge and the possible wind effect at the saddle when we got there.. Winds increased as we got to the car around 2pm but snow quality was still good coming down with minor wind effect - likely not the same by end of day with mixed sun/cloud and high wind. Sorry no good pics of the ridge itself-
