Cathedral Mountain (attempt)

Sfreiberg, Saturday 2nd April, 2022 6:45PM

We were surprised by how much snow fell today. The amount of snow was not predicted on any weather models (Spotwx, Ventusky, Mountain Weather Forecast) It snowed continuously from 8am-2pm. There was about 5cm of fresh snow from 1700m to 2000m, 10 cm from 2000m to 2200m, and 15-20cm from 2200m to 2500m. There was evidence of loose wet avalanches (size 1) on south facing slopes from earlier in the week at about 2000m. We turned around at about 2500m because of whiteout conditions and dry loose storm snow sluffing off of the south facing cliffs. Skiing was ok down the south couloir and below until the treeline. There was about 10-15cm of new snow sitting on a hard crust. The sun came out for about an hour at 2pm but was completely cloudy again when we left the parking lot at 3pm.
