Wendy Thompson Hut

V. Timmis, Sunday 29th December, 2024 2:00PM
Skinned up to Wendy Thompson hut on Saturday Dec 27 and skinned/skied out Sunday Dec 29th. Dec 27: Cloudy, good visibility in the valley with some clouds hanging around the peaks above. 30-40cm of light snow on the ground, a few days old. Trail is currently packed down with marginal coverage in some sections of the forest. Some sections in here were a bit icy as a result. We did not observe any signs of instability. Light snowfall in the evening which subsided before bed. Snow once out of the dense forest is amazing! Dec 28: Left Wendy Thompson around 11:30am and returned to hwy 99 at 5pm. Mix of sun and clouds, sunnier in the morning and clouded by evening. Observed from the valley a crack above a windslab around what we estimate to be 2000m up near climax (see photo). Looks to be a possible size 2-3. Also noticed some pinwheeling on that face from that point toward the SE. Otherwise did not note other signs of instability aside from possible wind loading on SW facing ridges. Other skiers that had gone beyond the hut in the morning did not note signs of instability on return, but unsure where their objectives were. In the dense forest: too many creek hazards and lots of hazards (ie stumps and rocks) hiding in the occasional shallow pocket of snow for us to feel safe deviating from the marked trail in this area on the way down with heavy packs.

Weather Report

We had light wind between 5-7pm on Saturday Dec 27 in the valley around 1600-1800m. Did not note direction.
