No crust above 2100 m north of Sparwood! Took a lot of work to get there but the crust down low meant we had supportive conditions, even through tight trees that allowed us to get up high enough to enjoy the snow that missed the rain last week. Moving into the alpine the winds had blown the surface snow around a lot and either scoured back to almost rock or loaded up in stiff wind slabs. We only saw one loose dry avalanche out of extreme, leeward terrain and we covered a lot of ground and saw a lot of start zones. There was also surface hoar, 3-5 mm, all the way to the alpine on the surface. We didn't see it anywhere else this week but that may be because it grew last night. Keep an eye out for that when it gets buried.
